Company's History

TECNICAS Y OBRAS SUBACUATICAS, S.L. TECNICAS Y OBRAS SUBACUATICAS SL (TECNOSUB henceforth) was established in February 21st, 1975, as a result of the association of different professionals and with the aim to provide commercial diving services to new born oil & gas industry in Spain.

After first years based in Cartagena (Murcia), TECNOSUB moved to Tarragona where they participated in the development of an emerging petrochemical enclave in an area where the industry had to live with a growing tourism industry that was and it still is extremely sensitive to potential contamination due to oil spills.

TECNOSUB still maintains its headquarters and facilities in Tarragona, with suitable equipment and resources to develop our business.

Throughout these 35 years, TECNOSUB activities have remained faithful to the original idea, to develop best diving services for installation, maintenance, repair and operation of oil facilities, and provide assistance to maritime accidents.

The international activities in the field of oil installations in Libya began in 1978 with the repair of a cooling pipe 48" for ESSO STANDARD. The result of our work, with great satisfaction expressed by the customer, opened the door to other projects in the same company as well as other companies in the area that was a reason for TECNOSUB to be reworded with Recommendation Letters.

Early 80's were years of rapid growth and TECNOSUB was involved directly on it working in facilities on the coast of Tarragona such as the extraction platform "Casablanca" for Chevron and all the piping, risers, manifolds ... for Heerema and Shell. TECNOSUB continued its submarine maintenance works on the platform until December 1984.

During this time TECNOSUB received from Enpetrol a recognition for its maintenance and assistance to the mooring and unloading of ships in the SBM of Tarragona, were services had been providedcontinuously since 1979.

While work was carried out on the Spanish coast, TECNOSUB consolidated its international presence by carrying out repairs to single buoy type SALM in Marsa El Brega (Libya) for ESSO, corrective maintenance on the SPM type in SIRTE OIL COMPANY, Sirte (Libya), offshore oil support operations for the company GEPSA (Guineo- Española Petroleum SA) in Equatorial Guinea and the installation of oil terminals in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba Islands for the company ATLANTIC SHIPPING.

In Spain, company refitted and commissioned a single buoy type SALM for CAMPSA in Badalona, kept operating the SBM in Tarragona (for REPSOL) and it was involved in maintenance tasks such as changing hoses in Algeciras for CEPSA the year 1989. These operations were performed using a saturation system that allowed an improvement on safety and time requested to perform the project.

The 90's supposed TECNOSUB consolidation in the oil and gas but also the confirmation of the company's position in Spain on the field of marine salvage and pollution response.

TECNOSUB, since its creation, provided support services and maritime salvage in Spanish waters in collaboration with SMIT and Wijsmuller, two of the largest companies, with whom company acquired necessary knowledge to develop this area by itself over this decade to become in 1997 the first Spanish Government contractor for the Marine Salvage. During 6 years the company was present in each and every one of the incidents on the Spanish coast and also carried out salvage operations in Africa.

During this period, November 2001, TECNOSUB's divers were recognized with the "Silver Anchor" for its work in defense of the marine environment during the extraction of fuel on "Castillo de Salas" Wreck.

In 1998 Company maintain mooring and unloading operations in the oceanic terminal of PETROGAL, Leixoes (Portugal) where tasks were performed until July 2010. During those years TECNOSUB's staff had demonstrated their ability and worth to perform operations in a professional manner and comply with quality standards and more stringent security in a difficult environment due to the weather of the Atlantic.

Different companies required our cooperation and technical advice for their maintenance and repair of their oil facilities, as it happened in late 1999 where we were required by the CEPSA refinery in San Roque for assistance in the replacement of two submarine hose.

In Libya, TECNOSUB conducted large-scale projects in the field of maintenance as those held in Sirte during the summers of 2002 and 2003 with the inspection and cleaning of seawater intakes for the refinery and the inspection and repair of SBM Berth 5 and SBM Berth 6 in 2004. In 2005, WAHA OIL COMPANY (Libya) engaged services of the company for the installation of the new single buoy and later that year Company performed same job, and also to built a new spool, for ENI OIL (Libya) The Melitah Refinery and Assistance for Pipe Laying.

The importance of TECNOSUB in the industry and their nationwide presence was evident when a serious accident occurred at the single buoy of Tarragona. TECNOSUB was hired by the Tanker insurance for the inspecting of the body and anchorages of the SBM and submits a recommendation report to clarify fire incident.

In 2008 TECNOSUB began working continuously with Saipem on their projects in the Mediterranean Sea (Balearic and Medgaz). Operations performed were focused on assistance of pipelines laying and shore pull activities ashore. Similar assistance was provided for pressure testing as well as inspections prior to project Pre commissioning and delivery to the customer.

In 2009, TECNOSUB was admitted at IMCA being so far the only Spanish commercial diving company accepted. Earlier that year, TECNOSUB was awarded with diving support contract for the project Trunk Line and Production in Republic of Kazakhstan. This project represented the opening of a new company in that country, the project duration was for two years (2010 and 2011) it has provided assistance on pipe and cable laying and burial. TECNOSUB for this project had mobilized seven diving systems, three hyperbaric chambers, four fast crafts and more than 70 people have been employed in the different phases. This project was conducted under the highest standards in the oil and gas industry, being monitored by SHELL's Diving Center personnel of (Excellence SHELL), which is one of the most prestigious institution in the world of commercial diving.

In 2010 TECNOSUB participated in the project to replace an old sea line and to install two Spools and new Plem Huelva Refinery for the company CEPSA.

In 2011 TECNOSUB participated in various phases of CASTOR project for SAIPEM on the coast of Castellón for the development of a new Gas Reservoir using an old oil well.
